A double anniversary – 30 years of Subterania and 20 years to the day since the “High Above the Subterania Club”, Subterania are thrilled to welcome legendary prog and psychedelic rock pioneers, Gong.
20 years ago on the 6th of April 2000, Gong made a comeback celebrating the release of ‘Zero 2 Infinity’ at the iconic Subterania on Portobello Road.
“It was the beginning of a new cycle for Gong. A new album, a new label, a new drummer, a new synthesizer wiz, and a new agency with the potential for a fresh management vision. This was our first gig of the 2000 naughty naughties & aside from three thoroughly distracted rehearsals we hadn’t played together for five months. To add to the pressure the gig was going out as webcast & eventually become a DVD & live CD.
Somehow when the day came, we forgot all this & it all morphed into a huge fluorescent fancy dress party with a bunch of our old tribal pals & friends old & new in a club in Portobello Rd. – for years the epicentre of our London lifetimes.”
Now 20 years on, Gong are set to return celebrating both 30 years of the venue as Subterania (previously Acklam Hall, Bay 63) and 20 years on from that celestial show.
The ever metamorphosing entity that is Gong launches, as ever, into unknown – and unknowing – territory with a new album and tour, destined to be talked about, discussed, and argued over, up and down the land.
From its beginnings in a French commune in 1967, through the Virgin Records years, mismanagement, court cases, break-ups and rejoinings, deaths and rebirths – there has always been a continuous thread of beautiful, dangerous and extraordinary music.
The current holders of the flame have come together over the last seven years; sinuous bass player Dave Sturt joined just as the album 2032 was shown to the world; Ian ‘Eastwinds’ East was the next to blow in through the portal; Fabio Golfetti brought his guitars from Brazil (after working with Daevid for many years); Kavus Torabi appeared to Daevid in a vision; Cheb Nettles just sort of turned up.
Gong’s musically diverse world includes shades of psychedelia, space rock, jazz, avant-garde, krautrock and surreal soundscapes.
Signed-up members of the precariat, Gong have never played it safe.
Over 50 years of music history rolled into one night, join us for a night of celebration.
